The Alberta Teachers’ Association will present Dr. Sandra Anderson with the Public Education Award at the 95th Annual Representative Assembly, in May.
For more than two decades before her retirement in 2011, Anderson served the Association and its membership exceptionally well as a lawyer with Field Law, the ATA’s legal counsel. Practising primarily in the areas of labour, employment and privacy law, she represented the Association in arbitrations, boards of reference and ministerial reviews falling under the School Act and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
In addition to her many contributions to the ATA, Anderson has demonstrated a deep commitment to public education. Prior to earning her law degree at the University of Calgary, she served two terms as a trustee on the Calgary Board of Education and represented the board on a number of legislation and labour relations-based committees, chairing the board’s negotiating committee. In addition to being a member and chair of the Board of Regents of Augustana University, Anderson also served in all the executive positions on the board of the Canadian Association for the Practical Study of Law and Education. She is also on the board of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Edmonton Region. Prior to obtaining her law degree, Anderson obtained a Ph.D. in German literature.
The ATA’s Public Education award is given annually to an individual or group that has provided outstanding support to public education in Alberta.
